The University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu City is considered as the oldest school in the country and in Asia. Formerly known as the Colegio de San Ildefonso, it was founded by the Spanish Jesuits on August 1, 1595. This makes the Cebu-based university older than the University of Santo Tomas (1611) in Manila and Harvard University (1636) in the United States.The University of Santo Tomas, however, contests this title. Formerly known as the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, UST was the first school, which got a university status in 1645. USC became a university in 1948. UST also claimed that the original USC was closed in 1769 as a result of the expulsion of the Jesuits. It reopened in 1783 under a new name and ownership. But the USC officials stick to their claim. The university observed its 400th foundation day on August 21, 1995.

USC was first established they say, but its history was segmental, it closed at some point in time. UST was established second and continued receiving UNENDING GRACE.

Haii nako. Insecure ata tong mga tga Santo Tomas kaya angal ng angal. Tsk. I thought we should be the ones to be insecured with the Santo Tomas school bcoz of what great school they've become. But sad to say SOME of them doesn't know how to understand simple texts like this.
USC is also a great school with great number of achievmnts like UST and we say you'r great and we too, are great...especially in Cebu, Visayas and Mindanao area. That's why people who wanted to get good education come to us and not in La Salle(in Toledo, Cebu) and that is also why the Ateneo cudn't put up a college here in our place bcoz they too know that USC can already sustain quality education for a great number of people here. Even UP here closed their high school to concentrate more on their college system bcoz they somehow knew that they cudn't surpass us as of here in Cebu(but I thnk they dnt hav to close up their HS bcoz they'r already bettr here.)
And we don't claim to be the best students. I'm not an achiever myself but USC made me better than what I was back then. :)
