Oldest School in the Philippines

The University of San Carlos (USC) in Cebu City is considered as the oldest school in the country and in Asia. Formerly known as the Colegio de San Ildefonso, it was founded by the Spanish Jesuits on August 1, 1595. This makes the Cebu-based university older than the University of Santo Tomas (1611) in Manila and Harvard University (1636) in the United States.

The University of Santo Tomas, however, contests this title. Formerly known as the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, UST was the first school, which got a university status in 1645. USC became a university in 1948. UST also claimed that the original USC was closed in 1769 as a result of the expulsion of the Jesuits. It reopened in 1783 under a new name and ownership. But the USC officials stick to their claim. The university observed its 400th foundation day on August 21, 1995.

let me just cleat this...
UST claims the title as oldest university in the Philippines and not University of San Carlos because:
1. "UST was formerly known as Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario and was established in 1611 as an ACADEMIC INSTITUTION while the University of San Carlos formerly known as Colegio de San Ildefonso was established in 1595 not as an academic institution but merely as a DORMITORY ONLY."
2. It was closed in 1769 with the expulsion of the Jesuits. In 1783, the Colegio-Seminario de San Carlos opened under new owners.
3. UST was the first to have a UNIVERSITY STATUS in 1645 while USC had it just 1948.

USC was first established they say, but its history was segmental, it closed at some point in time. UST was established second and continued receiving UNENDING GRACE.

to anonymous1:
1. is the word "COLEGIO" de san ildefonso refers to a dormitory only?,
2. i think this item is referring only to the "oldest school" not the oldest university..
3. so, i think this item holds true.
